Message From Mr. Groll:
The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a figure in the distance.
As he got closer, he realized the figure was that of a boy picking up something and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?"
The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the sea. The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die.
"Son, the man said, don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't possibly make a difference!"
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the surf. Then, smiling at the man said, "I made a difference for that one."
The staff and I are committed in making a difference!
Food for Thought as We Begin the Second Semester:
We are all familiar with the old adage that the three best things about being a teacher are June, July, and August. Now, personally, I don’t subscribe to that philosophy, but I know that sometimes the worst three things about being a teacher can be January, February, and March. Often times those cold, gloomy months of winter seem to drag on forever before the first hopeful signs of spring appear on the horizon. It can get especially difficult when our students, deep in the throes of cabin fever, become a little more rambunctious than usual. So as we begin this new semester and as we put our collective nose to the grindstone and shoulder to the wheel and begin the important task of preparing our students for the ISAT and PSAE let’s remember why we started in this most noble of professions and, in order to keep our spirits up, let’s start each day with the following thoughts…
ó I will begin the day with the Thank Goodness It’s Today (T.G.I.T.) philosophy
ó I will think: “This is my day and no one is going to ruin it for me.”
ó I will be as cheerful and friendly as possible
ó I will be less critical and more tolerant of my students and my colleagues
ó I will be the BEST I can be
ó I will remember what it was like to be a student
ó I will try to maintain a POSITIVE ATTITUDE throughout the day and in all circumstances
ó I will “seek first to UNDERSTAND and then to be UNDERSTOOD”
ó I will not worry or complain about that which I cannot control
ó I will deal with all situations calmly
ó I will share my smile at least five times
ó I will strive to make the lives of my students and my colleagues a little bit better each day
