The school district has been very excited to be able to use Test-to-Stay procedures this school year when students are found to be in close contact with a student in the school setting that has tested positive for COVID-19.  We have been able to keep so many more students in school rather than needing to exclude those students from school.  Test-to-Stay procedure allows the school (with parent/guardian permission) to test students on four different days following exposure to a close contact.  As long as the student remains negative, he/she can remain in school.

Recently, we have run into some problems on the school bus and we are asking for some assistance from you in communicating a joint message to our students.  You can only use the Test-to-Stay procedure if both the case and the close contact were “consistently masked” during the time of contact.  Unfortunately, we have several students removing their masks once they get on the bus and can hide behind the seat back.  Once a case is identified and we watch the video, we then are able to see the students have removed their masks.  As a result, we are forced to exclude the students from school rather than being able to keep them in school with Test-to-Stay.

I am sure you agree that we want our bus drivers focusing on driving safely rather than trying to see behind seats to watch whether or not students are wearing masks.  When students make the choice to remove their mask on the bus, they are taking a risk that they may be excluded from school.  Our ultimate goal is to keep as many students in school as possible.

The school would appreciate you reinforcing the message that the school and bus drivers are conveying to the students.
