Dear Arcola Jr./Sr. High students, parents and community members, As many of you already know our principal Lisa Sigrist has recently been diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called Neuroendocrine cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer has also spread to her liver and lungs. After several weeks and many appointments, she will be starting very aggressive chemo treatments. Mrs. Sigrist is in overall good health and continues to stay positive. She is a fighter and with the support and prayers of our community we are confident that she will overcome this. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Here are two options to show your support https://forms.gle/4kfdBCAShWbgYmZCA https://mealtrain.com/l13y2w

Today would have been our first football game of the season. Things are a little different this year for our players, coaches, and fans. Tony isn't lining the field, the money boxes aren't ready, and the press box is closed. For the first time in 27 years, Coach Lindsey isn't packing his Friday night football bag. We are very proud of our players and coaches who have put in all the work they have so far. On a scale of 1-10 how much do you miss seeing the Purple Riders on the field?

I wanted to send out a few reminders about iPad returns that will occur next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please follow these steps prior to coming to turn in your student(s) iPad and other tech items.  These instructions are for all grade levels. I've included a picture for reference. 1. be sure students are not logged into iTunes on their iPad.  Most students will not be logged into iTunes, but some of the upper grades might me. 2. If there is no sticker on the iPad with the student name, please tape a paper to the device with the student name on it if possible. 3. place both parts of the charger (the cord and the wall adapter) in a ziplock bag with the student name and current grade year on it. 4. place the iPad and the baggie with the charger in a large ziplock bag or brown paper bag with  the student name and current grade year on the outside of the bag.   5. Jr. Sr. High students please leave your Apple Pencil in the slot on your iPad case. 6. If iPads are broken in any way, please email me and let me know what the issue is.  jhohlbauch@arcolaschools.com At this point you should be ready to turn in iPad's to school.  I appreciate your help with this process and if you have any questions please email jhohlbauch@arcolaschools.com

Staff will report for a regular day of work. In addition, the building will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm for students and parents to come and pick up any items that will be needed over break. You will need to check into the office upon arrival. We recommend that a limited amount of people come to the building to collect materials. Again, there are no confirmed cases in Douglas County but we are trying to do our part to prevent the spread of the virus. I will be posting more information tonight regarding learning activities over the mandated school closure.

Blue was Tyson’s favorite color. The Arcola School District will wear blue on Monday as well, as a way to show our support. It takes a village and then some to help heal after such a tragic event. Please, continue to keep everyone involved in your thoughts and join us and other communities by also wearing blue. 💙

Scott's Law – If It's Flashing Move Over Driver Education Instructors, So far in 2019, 14 Illinois State Troopers have been hit by motorists while stopped on the side of the road, compared to eight incidents in calendar year 2018. The Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois State Police are working together to ensure all teen drivers, their parents, and families have the information they need to protect those who protect us. Scott's Law, also known as the Move Over Law, was named after Lieutenant Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department who was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver while assisting at a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Scott's Law mandates that upon approaching any stationary vehicle with flashing emergency lights, including commercial trucks and cars, all approaching vehicles shall: • reduce speed, • change lanes if possible; and • proceed with caution.

A large number of people believe e-cigarettes are a safer way to consume nicotine, and that nicotine isn't harmful .But that's not true. Each nicotine cartridge inserted into the Juul (called a pod) gives about 200 puffs, providing as much nicotine as a whole pack of cigarettes, per the website. https://draxe.com/juuling/?fbclid=IwAR3mVT76RsxdS48GDiB44cQvBqq2WAMXYkg9ZsL6pidNF3xJqJAnXjqC-wI
