The Arcola School Board voted last night to transition the school day to a 2:00 pm dismissal for all students in Grades K-12 beginning on Monday, October 19, unless circumstances arise that would force a change in that schedule. Students that are electing to come back from remote learning to in person learning will transition back to school on Tuesday, October 13.
The decision to delay the start of the 2:00 pm dismissal until the 19th was made to give staff a week to transition the students coming back from remote to in person learning. That will give the district staff time to be sure that we can adjust safely with the additional students in the building and also allow those students to be trained on the new routines and protocols in place. It will also give additional time to ensure that we have a safe plan in place for lunch and recess.
As a result of the schedule change, there will be changes for both in person and remote students. Please read the changes outlined below carefully.
Opting into Remote Learning
The district recently surveyed families regarding whether or not student(s) plan to attend school in person or remotely. We need families to make a final choice by Monday, October 5 at 12:00 pm and notify the school if their child(ren) will be on remote learning from October 13, through December 18, 2020.
A separate message will be sent to all families that will give parents/guardians a chance to select remote learning for their child(ren). You will only need to complete that survey if you want your student to be a full-time remote learning student. Parents/guardians must agree to abide by the remote learning expectations for the child(ren) to be eligible for the remote learning option. When selecting remote learning, the parent/guardian will be asked to read through the remote learning expectations and sign that they agree to follow the requirements..
Changes Due to Schedule
Due to the change in schedule, the following program adjustments will be made at school and also to remote learning:
1. All students K-12 will eat lunch at school with the high school students still having the opportunity to go off campus for the lunch period. Lunch served by the school will continue to be free through December 31 for all students but students are also welcome to bring their lunch to school. Only one hot meal choice will be served daily to start with no a la carte for any students. The school will follow IDPH Guidelines in that there will be no more than 50 individuals in any one space and the students will be at least 6 feet apart while they are eating lunch. The school will be using the old high school gym and the high school gym balconies as well as the cafeteria for students to eat.
2 All elementary students will have a short recess (10-15 minutes) following lunch. Weather permitting, the recess will consist of walking outside and maintaining social distance of 6 feet. Just like now when students are outside they will be able to take off their masks if 6 feet of distance between individuals can be followed.
3. For in person students in Grades K-6, the school will be adding special classes back into the schedule (PE, art, music) and be able to add back in social studies/science and some additional learning activities.
4. The JH-HS will implement a 9-period (38-minute period) each day. The schedule will follow the regular 2:00 dismissal schedule as outlined in the student handbook. The teachers will have from 2:00 – 3:00 pm daily to connect with students (remote, quarantined or in person students that need additional support).
5. Elementary remote learning students in Grades K-3 will continue to be required to view instructional videos, complete learning activities, and submit assignments. Remote learning is at least a 5-hour commitment each day in order to meet the state requirements. It will be a combination of self-paced, flexible participation (such as with specials: art, music, and PE) as well as live instruction or support at least once a day. Remote students in Grades 4 – 12 will be required to live stream into the classroom daily during all academic periods. Remote students that are receiving special education, RTI or English language services will have additional meetings that will be scheduled on a case by case basis. La Junta Escolar de Arcola votó anoche para hacer la transición del día escolar a una salida de las 2:00 pm para todos los estudiantes en los grados K-12 a partir del lunes, 19 de octubre, a menos que surjan circunstancias que obliguen a un cambio en ese horario. Los estudiantes que están eligiendo regresar de aprendizaje remoto para el aprendizaje en persona tendrán una transición de regreso a la escuela el martes, 13 de octubre.
La decisión de retrasar el inicio de la salida a las 2:00 hasta el 19 se hizo para dar al personal una semana de transición con los estudiantes que regresan del aprendizaje remoto al aprendizaje en persona. Optar por el aprendizaje remoto

Cambios debido al horario
Debido al cambio en el horario, se realizarán los siguientes ajustes al programa en la escuela y también al aprendizaje remoto:
1. Todos los estudiantes K-12 almorzarán en la escuela y los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria aún tendrán la oportunidad de salir del campus durante el período del almuerzo. El almuerzo servido por la escuela seguirá siendo gratuito hasta el 31 de diciembre para todos los estudiantes, pero los estudiantes también pueden traer su almuerzo a la escuela. Solo se servirá una opción de comida caliente al día para comenzar, sin menú a la carta para los estudiantes. La escuela seguirá las pautas de IDPH en el sentido de que no habrá más de 50 personas en cualquier espacio y los estudiantes estarán separados por al menos 6 pies mientras almuerzan.
