As a school community, we are deeply saddened to report the tragic passing of one of our junior high students on Wednesday evening, May 20. Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and all who are impacted by this tragedy. This loss affects everyone in our school family and in the broader Arcola community.
Our district is committed to doing everything we can to help our students and staff with the grieving and healing process. Grief counselors are available until 4:00 pm today and then again tomorrow, Friday, May 22 from 8 am – 3 pm at Arcola High School to support students who need someone to talk to.
We appreciate the community’s compassion and understanding as we work to support those affected. At this time, we will not be providing further comment.
Sincerely,
Tom Mulligan, Superintendent

We are writing to inform you about a student survey that will be administered at school called the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This is the tenth year the Illinois State Board of Education is requiring schools to take this survey. This survey is based on 20 years of research at the University of Chicago. It asks students about their experiences in school, giving school leaders critical student input to help develop school improvement plans.
Student participants (in grades 4-12) will be required to log-in using their student ID and birth date in order to complete the survey. Students’ identities will be completely confidential. Teachers or administrators will never see individual responses to survey questions and will only receive aggregated information, such as the total percentage of students who agree homework assignments help them learn the course material.
Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student(s). For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Survey Support at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.).
If you DO NOT want your son or daughter to participate, call the school office or email tmulligan@arcolaschools.com by Wednesday, February 11, 2026. The survey will take place prior to February 27, 2026.

Students for October were: Tyler Good, Aaron Sanchez, Miaya Brian, Devin Mose, Bryan Sanchez, Carolina Torres (Not Pictured), Evelyn Titus, Brody Phillips, Ansley Titus, Brayden Williams, Kenai Cano Garcia, and Jaiden Miller.
